Some Jackson Fans Plan to Protest ‘This Is It’
Not all of Michael Jackson’s fans are eagerly awaiting the release of the documentary “This Is It”: a contingent of the King of Pop’s admirers have started a group that plans to protest the film’s release, saying it sugarcoats the circumstances that led to Mr. Jackson’s death, Reuters reported. The documentary, which Sony Pictures is releasing on Wednesday, was compiled from footage shot during the rehearsals for the “This Is It” concerts that Mr. Jackson never got to perform in London. He died on June 25 from an overdose of several drugs, including propofol, an anesthetic he had been taking as a sleeping aid.
The protest group, which calls itself This Is Not It, says the movie offers a distorted view of Mr. Jackson, presenting him as being in good health, while it enriches people who the group says should have taken better care of him. “While this footage was being shot, people around him knew that he looked like he might have died,” the group says in a statement on its Web site. “Those who stood to make a profit chose to ignore it.” The group says it will hand out fliers at premieres for the film next week.
